When it was that I saw,

When I ate and moved my jaw;

I saw a bunch of empty chairs-

I know the scene's not so rare.

And I thought it was inhumane

A solitary place like this to gain.

I hate to say farewell

But I had to say farewell;

And here I know I'm not well--

And to paradise I said farewell.

I thought and thought with crooked brow,

When the moonlight to me did show

My guitar, my only living company!

With joy I took it, my chum! My honey!

A hand on it and Ah!

With joy I shout "Hurrah!"

I left despair and grabbed peace-

And then to my guitar I did kiss!

The rhythm of the strings

Made the birds move their wings,

The moon became sun

And I was no more alone.
